Welcome to Eifel National Park

Within a landscape characterised by water and woods, the Eifel National Park offers to experience the fascination wilderness. Natures' breathtaking beauty and vital diversity contiuously growths and decays in the park. It is situated about 65 kilometers south-west of Cologne and 50 kilometers southeast of Aachen.

The parks motto is "Let nature be nature". Follow the black woodpeckers call into the “Jungle of Tomorrow”. Enjoy the thrilling views over three water reservoirs of the Eifel region or relax while hiking through romantic stream valleys and impressive beech forests. The Park offers unique hikes and numerous activities adressing all ages. Additionally, our programm addresses all our visitors certainly including people with physical or mental disabilities. Don’t hesitate to engage in a virtual visit of the Park and dive into natures' real world with us!

Four visitor centers, so called National Park - Gates in Schleiden-Gemuend, Simmerath-Rurberg, in the train station of Heimbach and in Monschau-Höfen, display interesting exihibits combined with comprehensive tourist information. From here, you can discover the National Park, for example, by joining one of the guided tours (see under “Experiencing Nature”).

Consisting of about 110 square kilometers, the Eifel National Park has been founded on the 1st of January 2004 and is the 14th national park in Germany. It is located in the central mountain range of the northern Eifel region. Due to its neighbouring Belgian border, it represents the most western national park in Germany. Large areas of decidious forests with deep reaching river valleys characterise the northern part of the Park. Indulge in the rushing streams and Yellow Daffodils in the southern areas during spring.

Stretching over 33 square kilometers, the district Dreiborner Hochfläche (Dreiborn plateau) has been accessible since 1st of January 2006. This whole area has served as military training area “Vogelsang” for a period of 60 years. Water bodies, such as the rivers Urft and Rur, forests, such as the endemic and protected beech forests and the true wilderness are home for rare plant and animal species.

The Eifel National Park is home to more than 930 endangered animal and plant species. About 1.300 beetle species were discovered in our forests. Red deer, wild cats, beavers, black storchs, eagle owls and even wall – lizzards inhabit the region. Regarding vegetation, there is one particular plant fascinating our visitors every spring: the Yellow Daffodils, which create yellow carpets of flowers over the landscapes.
